Got Questions?

Everything you need to know about the ACT

What is the ACT? +
The ACT is a multi-section standardized test used by colleges and universities across the United States as part of their admissions process. It measures your readiness for college-level work in four core subject areas.
What are the ACT sections and how long does each take? +
English: 45 minutes, 75 questions
Math: 60 minutes, 60 questions
Reading: 35 minutes, 40 questions
Science: 35 minutes, 40 questions
Writing (optional): 40 minutes, 1 essay prompt
Is the Writing section required? +
No. The Writing section is optional and costs extra. Not all colleges require it — check the admissions requirements for each school you're applying to before deciding whether to take it.
What changed in the 2025–26 ACT format? +
Reading: Shorter passages with fewer questions per passage.
Science: Increased emphasis on real-world data interpretation and graphs.
Math: More multi-step problems requiring deeper reasoning.
Thirty6 is fully updated for the current format.
How is the ACT scored? +
Each section is scored from 1–36. Your composite score is the average of all four section scores (rounded to the nearest whole number). The optional Writing section is scored separately and does not affect your composite.
What is a good ACT score? +
26+: Competitive for most colleges and universities
30+: Competitive for top schools and merit scholarships
34–36: Ivy League tier and highly selective institutions
Your target score depends on the schools on your list.
How does Thirty6 adapt to my level? +
Thirty6 tracks your accuracy by subject area and specific topic. The adaptive engine identifies your weakest areas and schedules more practice in those zones — so every question is calibrated to push you forward, not bore you with what you already know.
What does the free tier include? +
Free users get 10 practice questions per day across all four subject areas (English, Math, Reading, Science), plus basic explanations for each answer. No account required — sessions are tracked via browser cookie.
What does Premium unlock? +
Premium ($19.99/month) gives you unlimited questions, detailed explanations with step-by-step reasoning, full-length exam simulations, access to live leaderboards and friend challenges, XP and streak tracking, and subject-by-subject analytics to pinpoint exactly where to focus.
